The Support Group was founded in 1986 by the late Yvonne and George Stollery DSM, with the aim of helping cancer patients and their families at Anglesea Road Hospital, and later, on Somersham Ward, in the Woolverstone Wing of the Heath Road Hospital.
The officials and members, who work on a totally voluntary basis, come from all walks of life and many have had first-hand experience of cancer.
There are many ways in which the Group has improved the quality of life for those on the ward, both in the provision of medical equipment and added comforts.
In addition, there is also a visitors room with tea and coffee making facilities
and overnight accommodation is available.
All patients on the ward receive Christmas and Easter presents from the group.
In recent years the Group has expanded its activities to include the Oncology unit and Radiotherapy Department.
Fundraising is an essential and on-going activity. This takes many forms – from donations, legacies, car boot sales, coffee mornings, social gatherings and events run on our behalf. Local schools and businesses are also very supportive with donations in cash and kind.
The Group works very closely with all the staff at the Hospital to ensure that the best possible use is made of available resources.
The charity is very active and always welcomes new members. Regular meetings are held in a most friendly atmosphere. Should you wish to find out more please contact any of the group members listed below:
